Last night, University Settlement was featured on CBS’s weekly series ‘Behind the Red Tape.’ The segment shines a light on the low salaries paid by city contracts that fund nonprofit programs that are the backbone of NYC’s social services.
“It’s hard to live in the city when you’re not being paid enough,” Jewell Campbell, Program Director of Youth & Community Programs (Manhattan) said. “I actually work part-time on Sundays just to make sure to make ends meet.”
Jewell’s struggle is experienced by thousands in the nonprofit world – often women of color.
“It’s not acceptable. It’s inequitable and, quite frankly, it falls on the shoulders of women, and women of color primarily, because that’s who is really doing this work,” Melissa Aase, CEO of University Settlement shared.
